Meet the Farmers

Jason “Matt” Hamilton II

Jason grew up moving around western and central Connecticut, always yearning for the ocean. On the rare trips his family took to Mystic, Connecticut, he knew this was where he wanted to be. In 2012, he made the bold move to the area with his girlfriend (now wife) to support her marine science studies. Little did he know, helping her with field experiments would introduce him to the world of oyster farming. He soon found himself working at Fishers Island Oyster Farm, where he met Will and formed a lasting friendship. Just before the pandemic hit, Jason and his wife were excited to learn they were expecting a baby girl. With the uncertainty of COVID and extra time during lockdown, Jason saw the perfect opportunity to turn Sixpenny Oyster Farm from a passion project into a full-time business for both him and Will. He dove in headfirst, and the rest is history!

William grew up in Mystic, CT and has always been fascinated with the ocean. During his summers, while home from college, you could find him shucking oysters locally in the Mystic area - a job he credits as sparking his interest in aquaculture. This lead him to transfer from a college in Pennsylvania to the University of Rhode Island, where he went on to graduate Cum Laude with a B.Sc. in Aquaculture and Fisheries Technology. During his time at URI, William had the opportunity to travel to the Philippines and study their local aquaculture practices, learn the benefits of multi-trophic aquaculture, and understand the importance of sustainability to local ecosystems. After graduation, William began working full time at Fishers Island Oyster Farm, where he met and partnered up with Jason to form Sixpenny Oyster Farm.
